all times in Pacific
this lab is on Zoom

The Body of Our Poetry is a 4-week poetry class with writing prompts, discussion sessions, and time to share work. This class is valuable to writers of all forms of creative writing (not just poetry). Each week, we’ll focus on a new topic:

  1. Foundations: The Elements of Poetry

  2. A Deeper Dive: Poetic Terminology

  3. Say It Different: Developing Your Poetic Voice

  4. Editing Is Your Friend: Getting To The Meat of it All

A DEEPER DiVE: POETiC TERMiNOLOGY
Let’s dive deep into those elements that make a poem a poem and the figures of speech that set poetry apart from prose writing. Metaphors and similes are ways to see the familiar, evoke imagery, and make poems more memorable. Personification brings powerful imagery and places human attributes to inanimate objects or ideals, facilitating connection and personal investment in the world of the poem.

In this second session, we’ll look at different classic poems by Emily Dickinson and Maya Angelou that connect these figures of speech then follow with writing prompts.
