Performance & Protection: Page to Stage & Copyrights

all times in Pacific
this lab is on Zoom

Spoken Word. Open Mic. Readings. Performance Poetry. Salons. Reciting. What do these all have in common and what’s the skinny on all the buzz? The five-year run of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam in the early 2000’s brought poetry out into the mainstream and to the masses on a global stage. There’s a whole culture of and world to it and rules/elements to that world.

In this lab, you’ll learn how to hear and hone the rhythm of your own writing. We will watch a few performances to see how elements such as cadence/tone/inflection feed and flourish the journey of bringing one’s poetry from the page to the stage. How to stay true to your words and vision to bring what only you can bring!

Participants will get a chance to read their own or another writer’s work. There will be a writing prompt, and we’ll wrap things up with learning how to protect the work you’re going to put out into the world.

*Please come prepared with a poem of your own or another’s work.*

led by Pamela "Jaz" Banks
