Script Lab
a playwriting group

1st Sat of each month
10 am - 12 pm PT
online

Script Lab is an online monthly playwriting group. The sessions are a combination of sharing work and receiving feedback, mini workshops on craft and process, writing exercises, industry/career conversations, and open discussions. There are occasionally small projects that require work between sessions. More than anything, Script Lab is an intimate cohort of playwrights sharing their challenges and successes as they make art and navigate the industry.

Who’s Eligible to Join?

  • Professional* playwrights who are committed to sharing, learning, and supporting.

    • We know “professional” is a loosey-goosey term. For us, it means that you are serious about playwriting, pursuing it as a career or artistic practice, and have experience in the industry. In other words, it is not your hobby and you are not a beginner.

  • The max number of members at any time is 12.

Group Expectations

  • Attendance is key to joining the group. Participation is a combination of listening to others' work, sharing your own work, asking questions, bringing ideas, and being a supporter and celebrator of the group's successes.

  • If you miss two sessions in a row, you’ll be asked if you’d like to continue. If you cannot make the third meeting in a row, you’ll be asked to step away from the group.

  • Shared work is given 30 minutes, including reading scenes out loud and feedback. You must attend at least two sessions before sharing work.

  • These are our established rules:

    • Show up on time, if possible.

    • Keep your camera on, if possible. It's always nice to get to know one another by both face and voice. If you're not able to be on camera, please let me know beforehand.

    • If you need any accessibility accommodations, let me know and we'll work together on making sure you're comfortable.

    • Be prepared to write. Be prepared to share. Be prepared to ask questions and give feedback. We're all in this together.

    • Open minds and generous hearts are required.

    • Big egos and dismissive language will not be tolerated.

Membership Dues:

  • Membership is $246/year or $68/quarter (January - March, April - June, July - September, October - December).

  • New members can join at the start of each quarter.

  • If you are on the yearly plan, your dues are due (heh heh) the month before you start with us.

  • If you are on the quarterly plan, payments are due:

How do I join?

  • Complete the application below. You will be asked:

    1. Why you want to be a part of this group;

    2. To share your experience as a “professional” playwright;

    3. To name a play that has moved you;

    4. What topics you’d like to discuss;

    5. If you can commit to the group expectations.

  • Eligible playwrights will be added to a waitlist in the order they request to join and will be contacted when there’s a new opening.

  • Members can stay with the group as long as they would like unless they’re asked to leave.

  • Reasons a member might be asked to leave the group include: lack of attendance or participation, preventing others from participating, creating an unsafe environment, general disruption, delinquent membership dues, mismatch with group goals/expectations, being a jerk.
