2023 End-of-Year Survey Results

THANK YOU to everyone who took our end-of-year survey! We appreciate the time you’ve taken to give us feedback.
We’re actively using this data to help us improve our programming and practices.

Here are some of the takeaways from your responses:

More of you attended online labs (workshops & classes) than in-person ones.

The interest in playwriting labs is more than double the interest in other writing genres.

What was a highlight for you with SCRiB LAB this year?

The collaborative discussions with playwrights on engaging with Seattle theaters for more staging of works by Seattle playwrights.”

“The short play festival, reading each of the members plays and focusing as a director of one of the member's play.”

“Writing and sharing! Practice!”

“Participating in the five minute play performance, I directed. And Joining the playwriting group.”

“Attending the summer mixer at Seattle Rep and getting to meet and hear from other local writers".”

What would you like to see more of?

Events that provide opportunities to network and learn more about local arts communities.”

“Playwriting-related classes and workshops.”

“More beginning playwright workshops, and more in-person functions.”

“in-person events, playwright social gatherings, organized play readings”

“More community-building events. More social opportunities.”

More than half of you plan to attend online events in 2024, opposed to in-person ones.

The majority of you report that we’ve helped you reach your writing goals.

Tell us more about how we helped you reach your writing goals:

“SCRiB LAB provides a reliable space for writing in my life and a community of like-minded individuals who support my creative practice.”

“I met my collaborative partner at a SCRiB LAB event and we are co-drafting our first script together.”

“Showing up for an online "writing together" session pushed me to finish the latest revision on one of my plays, and now it's closer to where I want it to be!”

“Getting me back into it! And giving out very good information with very good practice. Great instructors, encouraging and knowledgeable.”

“Helped me better understand other writers' goals, and given me time to work towards writing and making my own creations!”

Where can we improve as we move forward?

“More meaningful content to engage the professional playwrights in town.”

“Communication, the emails felt sporadic.”

“I feel like SCRiB LAB is the impromptu, fun-but-casual cousin of the oh-so-serious Hugo House. Take over a large coffee shop, open air amphitheater (in the summer), or other semi-public-ish space for a Sunday afternoon open mike reading with collaboration and cross-genre idea pollination games.”

“I personally found the 10 minute play project difficult. I guess I don't feel like I need that type of project from my writing groups. Putting on productions isn't my why for ScriptLab. I want to improve my craft.”

“All I can say is that you need not provide as much swag unless you really love doing it.”

KEY TAKEAWAYS & OUR ACTIONS:

  • There’s a strong request for more playwriting-specific programming, specifically in-person events for networking and reading work.

    • We’re working on this! Keep an eye out for more announcements in April.

  • SCRiB LAB has been an invaluable space for some of you to work on your own writing and connect with community.

    • This makes us squee with joy!

  • You really want more local in-person events but also want online labs.

    • We hear you! We’re putting some plans in place for more Seattle-area events. We’ll continue holding monthly online labs as well.

  • You want more communication from us.

    • We’ve started sending mid-month emails and more frequent social media posts, but we’ll keep finding new ways to communicate.

  • You want less swag.

    • We love our silly mini writers’ kits and personalized notebooks! And we work with a local artisan to make them . . . so we may have to think about this one some more.

  • 2 members of SCRiPTlab (monthly playwriting group) did not find the multi-month play project useful, but 2 other members mentioned it as a highlight of their year.

    • We’ll continue to work with the members of SCRiPTlab on projects to ensure everyone feels the sessions are helping them with their goals.
