The Body of Our Poetry

all times in Pacific
this lab is on Zoom

The Body of Our Poetry is a 4-week poetry class with writing prompts, discussion sessions, and time to share work. This class is valuable to writers of all forms of creative writing (not just poetry). Each week, we’ll focus on a new topic:

  1. Foundations: The Elements of Poetry

  2. A Deeper Dive: Poetic Terminology

  3. Say It Different: Developing Your Poetic Voice

  4. Editing Is Your Friend: Getting To The Meat of it All

FOUNDATiONS: THE ELEMENTS OF POETRY
In this first session, we’ll learn how poetry is a body of creative expression made up of certain elements. We’ll explore these basic elements at length through figurative language, repetition, rhythm & rhyme, lines, stanzas, and lineation. We’ll then see these elements in action through reading one of Dr. Maya Angelou’s most famous poems “Still I Rise.” We’ll deepen the learning of figurative language by engaging the senses through a writing prompt.
