Our history:
SCRiB LAB was started in February 2021 by Miriam BC Tobin as a space for writers to gather and share ideas during a time of isolation. She hosted virtual study halls (now called the Writing Lab) which quickly grew into a whole suite of online workshops and classes.
For the first 3 years, SCRiB LAB served writers of all genres. A roster of teachers led classes in fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, hybrid, and playwriting. We also hosted the teaching practicums of over 2 dozen Goddard College MFAW students. Here’s a sample of the writing labs we offered during that time:
In the spring of 2023, we held a “mini summit” to survey the Seattle playwriting community. For 3 hours, 50+ playwrights discussed how we could come out of the pandemic as a more-resourced community.
In 2024, SCRiB LAB rebranded as a playwriting organization with a focus on the Seattle area, though we have continued to partner with literary arts orgs to feature multi-genre writing.
And then we started a playwriting conference to bring our community together to share resources, network, and learn together.
In 2025, we started incorporating the outdoors into our programs, adding an annual playwriting retreat and seasonal nature walks.
And in 2026, we’re launching Scrib Mag, our brand new little lit mag and transforming our annual conference into Scrib Fest, a two-day conference/festival for all performance writers.
As we continue to grow, we hope you’ll join us for the adventure!
